OmniTRAX Logistics Services Transloads Major Steel Shipment at Sand Springs Railroad Facility
Posted On: July 15, 2016

DENVER – OmniTRAX Logistics Services, LLC (OLS), the transloading, terminal and logistics affiliate of OmniTRAX, Inc., recently managed the handling and warehousing of over 10 million pounds of coiled steel for one of their transload customers in Sand Springs, OK.  The operation involved a dedicated 50-car train with 225 steel coils each weighing 45,000 pounds received from NUCOR Steel in Hickman, AR via the OmniTRAX-managed Sand Springs Railway Company and BNSF Railway, and transported to a leading steel pipe manufacturer in Sand Springs.

“This operation demonstrates our full capabilities as a company – working with all partners in our transportation and logistics network, including the BNSF Railway, to move this amount of coiled steel from the point of production to the point of manufacturing safely and efficiently. Our team worked very hard to make this process easy for our customer by coordinating all activities with each party and communicating all progress in near real time,” said Tim Eklund, Vice President – Transload and Logistics at OmniTRAX.

The steel coil is being shipped to one of North America’s foremost providers of tubing solutions to the global market for processing into pipes and structural rods and will be temporarily stored at the OLS transload facility in Sand Springs. In the past, this quantity of steel has been moved by barge.

“This shipment demonstrates that rail is a competitive option in many instances where it hasn’t been utilized previously,” added Eklund.

OLS currently operates transload and terminal facilities on OmniTRAX–affiliated railroads located in Windsor, CO.; Sand Springs (Tulsa), OK; Brownsville, TX, Borger, TX and soon in Grand Forks, BC, and Stockton, CA.  Through these existing facilities, OLS handles a diverse range of commodities, including industrial products, steel, building products, frac sand, chemicals and plastics.
