Great Western Railway Commemorates 115th Anniversary Local Celebrations Planned
Posted On: November 26, 2016

WINDSOR and GREELEY COLO. – November 14 2016 – The Great Western Railway of Colorado, LLC, an affiliate of OmniTRAX, Inc., one of the largest privately held transportation service companies in North America and an affiliate of The Broe Group, is celebrating 115 years of service to northern Colorado.

“What started as a means to bring sugar beets from field to factory has helped transform a once rural community into a leading industrial hub,” said OmniTRAX CEO Kevin Shuba.  “We are so fortunate to be part of the Great Western’s story, and we want to use the 115th Anniversary to give back to all the partners along the way who have made the railroad the success it is today.”

For all the local railroad fans, the GWR is honoring its 115th Anniversary by sponsoring a free day at the Colorado Model Railroad Museum on Nov. 19th.  Admissions to the museum will be on a first come, first serve basis.  Hours of operation are 10am – 4pm, and the museum is located at 680 10th St. in Greeley.

To ensure that future generations know and appreciate the rich history of the GWR, they are also donating copies of the recently published book The Great Western Railway by well-respected Colorado historian Kenneth Jessen to all local public schools and libraries.  This book includes 186 photos, 14 drawings and 6 maps that provide a comprehensive overview of the railroad from its beginning in 1901 to modern times, including its later role in TV shows and movies.

And to cap off the celebrations, the GWR will proudly transport Santa to the Windsor Winter Wonderland festival on December 3rd.  Santa will ride in on the railroad’s famous Yellowstone, a Pullman-type car built in 1898 that famously carried Teddy Roosevelt during his 1900 whistle-stop campaign tour.  The car has been fully restored to its original specifications with mahogany interior and carpeting, but also modernized to include kitchen facilities and an electronically controlled AC-system.
