Windsor Wonderland kicks off holiday season, honors 115 years of the Great Western Railway
Posted On: December 1, 2016

WINDSOR, COLO. – Dec. 1, 2016 – Every year the Town of Windsor and the Windsor Chamber of Commerce come together to host the annual Windsor Wonderland festival.  This year there is lots to celebrate, including the 115th anniversary of the Town’s beloved railroad, the Great Western Railway of Colorado, LLC (GWR), an affiliate of OmniTRAX, Inc., one of the largest privately held transportation service companies in North America and an affiliate of The Broe Group.

“For the past three years the Great Western has generously transported Santa to the festival on their historic Yellowstone railcar, which has become a real treat for the kids to see and a highlight of the day,” said Connie Rutz, chair of the Windsor Wonderland planning committee.  “This year we hear the Great Western is also offering extra special giveaways in honor of 115 years of service to the community – it shouldn’t be missed!”

Said Mike Monsour, General Manager for the GWR: “We love being able to partner with the Town and the Chamber to make the Windsor Wonderland a truly memorable day for the community.  The planning committee does such a fantastic job making sure every detail is perfect, and we also try to leave the train out for a bit after arriving, so that people can take pictures in front of the car.  It’s truly a classic having been built in 1898 and fully restored.”

People travel from all across Colorado to see the Yellowstone, which famously carried Teddy Roosevelt across the country during his 1900 whistle-stop campaign tour.  The GWR also marked its 115th anniversary by sponsoring a free day at the Colorado Model Railroad Museum and is in the process of donating history books on the railroad to all the local public schools and libraries.

Santa will arrive at Windsor Wonderland by train at the 5th Street and Ash Street crossing.  The day will be filled with coffee, cocoa, cookies, s’mores, a snowball fight, petting zoo, tons of crafts and more.
