Our Railroads

South Branch Valley Railroad, LLC

The South Branch Valley Railroad (SBVR) comprises a 52.4-mile route from Petersburg to Green Spring where it links to the CSXT mainline connecting Cumberland, MD to Martinsburg, WV. The SBVR parallels the South Branch of the Potomac River-from which the railroad takes its name. Crossing Hampshire, Hardy and Grant counties, the SBVR serves the towns of Romney, Moorefield, and Petersburg.

The SBVR provides service to the Grant County Industrial Park, Petersburg; Moorefield Industrial Park; and Hampshire County Industrial Park, Romney.

In addition to the freight operations of the South Branch Valley Railroad, a private operator under contract with the state runs an excursion train. The Potomac Eagle excursion train runs on weekends during the summer and daily for the autumn-color season. Traveling out of Romney and through a scenic section of the South Branch Valley known as “The Trough,” the excursion train takes its name from the American bald eagles that are commonly sighted around the river by train passengers.

Industrial Site Development

The SBVR (South Branch Valley Railroad) is a 52.4-mile railway line that stretches from Petersburg to Green Spring, West Virginia. Originally a branch of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Co., it has evolved into an independent railroad providing freight services to the eastern panhandle of West Virginia. This railway plays a crucial role in facilitating the transportation of goods in the region, connecting various communities and industries along its route.

The addition of SBVR to the OmniTRAX rail network marks a significant milestone, making it the 26th railroad in their extensive portfolio. This development strengthens the economic prowess of the region, as SBVR joins forces with the highly successful Winchester and Western Railroad (WW) to bolster rail services in West Virginia. WW’s track record speaks volumes, having attracted an impressive $2.6 billion in direct investment along its route, leading to the creation of 6,000 direct and indirect jobs.
