BRG 100kAs Economic and Public Health Challenges Persist, Eight Local Non-profits Identified to Serve Immediate Community Needs

BROWNSVILLE, TX –– As the Brownsville community faces growing COVID numbers, sustained unemployment and strains on local education, activities and services, OmniTRAX and the Brownsville & Rio Grande International Railway (BRG) today distributed $100,000 in contributions to eight local non-profits. OmniTRAX COO Gord Anutooshkin, BRG President Norma Torres and OmniTRAX Director of Economic Development Federico Diaz Page joined board members and representatives from the receiving organizations at the BRG office today to share the company’s commitment to the region.

“Brownsville is an important partner for OmniTRAX and the BRG, and we recognize the distress being felt throughout the community,” said Diaz Page. “As the pandemic’s sustained effects strain resources even further, it was critical that we find a way to help those in need. With the local guidance of BRG President Norma Torres and the Brownsville Navigation District Board of Commissioners and Port Director & CEO Eduardo Campirano, these eight local nonprofits were identified as key community resources that offer meaningful and timely services to the Brownsville community.”

OmniTRAX and the BRG are supporting Proyecto Juan Diego, Moody Clinic, Good Neighbor Settlement, Sunshine Heaven, Walk for Women, Gladys Porter Zoo and the local Boy Scout and Girl Scout councils.

“As the leading economic engine of the Rio Grande Valley, the Port of Brownsville is committed to create better opportunities and improve the quality of life for our families in our region,” Campirano said. “We are delighted to partner with BRG and OmniTRAX to continue serving the diverse needs of our community and its residents.”

Brownsville & Rio Grande International Railway operates 45 miles of line at the Port of Brownsville, and interchanges with Union Pacific and KCSM. BRG traffic includes steel, agricultural products, food products, and  general commodities.
